Program Features

The Master of Health Services Administration (MHSA) program at Xavier is a CAHME-accredited, nationally-ranked program preparing leaders in healthcare management. As one of only seven Master of Health Services Administration programs in the country requiring the third-year administrative residency for full-time students, our graduates are readily employed.

Contemporary coursework covers the broad spectrum of health services administration skills, including healthcare management, financial, quantitative, strategic, clinical, policy, ethics and analytical proficiencies focused on leaders who make healthcare organizations better for persons who seek care.

Admission

Application Materials:

Domestic students application materials include, but are not limited to:

  • Preferred undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  • Two completed recommendation forms (from instructor or employer, family members not accepted)
  • Current resume
  • A 1,000 - 1,200 word statement of intent essay
  • Official transcripts from an undergraduate institution or anywhere a student has taken collegiate level courses
  • Personal interviews with Admissions Committee members

All of the above items must be submitted by the deadline of June 1 of the year you wish to begin the program in order to be considered for admission. Once your initial application has been accepted for review, additional information will be requested as needed.

The following are also highly recommended, though not required:

  • Accounting course
  • Economics course
  • Statistics course
  • Computer literacy course with working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel

The GMAT/GRE is not required for admission to Xavier's MHSA program.

Admission Criteria:

  • Academic Potential ("knowledgeable and highly skilled" from the Mission statement)
    • Preferred undergraduate GPA of 3.0 minimum verified by transcripts
    • Writing ability as shown in the "Statement of Intent" Essay
  • Leadership Potential ("values-oriented future leaders" from the Mission statement)
    • Truthful answers to all application questions, including disciplinary and criminal history
    • Supportive written references from at least two sources (employer and/or faculty member)
    • Examples of leadership service reflected on the resume
  • Commitment-to-the-Profession Potential ("future leaders who will contribute to the health of society by continuously improving the management of health-related organizations" from the Mission statement)
    • Reflective and complete content in the "Statement of Intent" essay
    • Honest and authentic exchange during the personal interviews with Admissions Committee members, especially with respect to the candidate articulating why he/she wants to earn an MHSA degree

Admissions Practices

  • MHSA classes begin in August of each year
  • The full-time class consists of no more than 30 students.
  • The full-time class moves through the program as a cohort.
  • Interested candidates start with our Recruitment Coordinator who directs them to the application process delineated on our website.
  • When the application package is deemed to be complete, the Recruitment Coordinator schedules the candidate for personal interviews with members of the Admissions Committee (MHSA Director plus Faculty members).
  • Once the interviews have been completed, the Admissions Committee members weigh the candidate against the Admissions Criteria (above).
  • Agreement to admit the candidate also requires approval by the Associate Dean of the College of Professional Sciences. An acceptance letter is then sent to the candidate with a deadline to accept.
  • Agreement to not admit the candidate or to place conditions on the candidates are handled with the applicant.
  • Once students accept admission, they are considered part of HSA and regular contact is maintained.

International Student Application Materials

International students application materials include, but are not limited to:

  • Statement of intent
  • Resume or C.V. (Curriculum Vitae)
  • Official TOEFL scores (Internet-based score requirements: 80 total, minimum of 20 in each section)
  • Official course by course WES evaluation (or other NACES member)
  • If applicable: Change of School Report

For students requesting support from Xavier University for an F-1 student visa, students must submit the following documents:

  • A copy of the information page of your passport
  • Sponsor Financial Statement Form
    • An original bank statement, showing available funds of at least USD $34,155.00
  • Tuition and Fees (required for the Form I-20)
    • Scanned/emailed, faxed, or photocopied documents sent in the mail will not be accepted
  • If you are currently enrolled in as a student in F-1 status at an institution of higher education in the United States, please submit the SEVIS Record Transfer Form
  • If you are currently in the United States in a different visa category and would like to change to F-1 status, please contact the Center for International Education for more information.

The following are also highly recommended, though not required:

HESA 572 - Healthcare Services in the U.S - Past and Future: - 3 Credit Hours - Provides (1) a historical perspective on the development of health care services in the United States, (2) a description of the key factors and issues which influence the development of the current health care delivery systems and (3) a description of the current health care delivery systems.

HESA 579 - Health Policy & Policy Analysis: - 3 Credit Hours - Provides an overview of health policy in the United States and introduces both qualitative and quantitative methods for analyzing health policy with attention given to the political and economic perspectives on health policy questions.

HESA 583 - Ethical Issues in Health Care: - 3 Credit Hours - Introduces students to the dominant ethical theories and principles, and the current ethical issues in health care (professional, clinical, Social, business, organizational). Provides students with the opportunity to begin to formulate an ethical position related to these issues.

HESA 720 - Institution & Community Analysis: - 3 Credit Hours - Provides the student with firsthand, in-depth skills in analyzing the internal operations of a health care institution, including governance, departmental structure, planning and financial management, and human resources development, as well as the external environments impacting the organization.

Master of Health Services Administration Program Options

Xavier's full-time option consists of four semesters of classroom study on campus in Cincinnati, Ohio followed by a paid 8-12 month administrative residency. Our Executive MHSA option is offered online and is designed to accommodate the needs of working healthcare professionals.

All full-time MHSA students participate in an administrative residency or an administrative fellowship for eight to 12 months. Settings include hospitals, health systems, supply chain or revenue cycle operations, healthcare consulting, health insurance, physician practice management organizations, post-acute services, and federally qualified health centers.


Residency Details

Dual Degree Option: MHSA and MBA

Students have the option of obtaining concurrent master’s degrees in Health Services Administration and Business Administration (MHSA/MBA). Candidates for both degrees should declare their intentions when applying and submit one application to the graduate program in health services administration and one application to the Williams College of Business.
